At 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov 1, most of the United States will turn clocks back one hour, giving many a bonus hour of sleep after Halloween.

Key points

  • Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on Nov. 1, 2026, giving most Americans an extra hour of sleep.
  • Sunrise and sunset will occur about an hour earlier after the change; in Boston sunrise moves from 7:16 a.m. to 6:17 a.m.
  • The Sunshine Protection Act, which would make DST permanent, has passed the House but still faces a Senate vote before early January.
  • Phones set to update automatically will change the time; Hawaii, most of Arizona, and several U.S. territories do not observe DST.

Most of the country will "fall back" an hour when daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026, according to CBS News. The change adds an extra hour of sleep for millions of Americans after the Halloween weekend.

The shift will move sunrise and sunset earlier. In Boston, for example, the sun rises at 7:16 a.m. and sets at 5:39 p.m. on Saturday, then on Sunday sunrise will be at 6:17 a.m. and sunset at 4:37 p.m., as reported by the National Weather Service.

When the clocks fall back

Daylight saving time, first adopted in 1918 during World War I to conserve fuel, has been adjusted several times. Congress set a uniform start and end date in 1966, and a 2005 law moved the end date from the last Sunday in October to the first Sunday in November, a rule in place since 2007.

Legislation known as the Sunshine Protection Act, which would make daylight saving time permanent, cleared the House in July and moved to the Senate. The CBS report notes that former President Trump publicly backed the bill and criticized Senator Tom Cotton for delaying it, while Cotton reminded lawmakers that past attempts at year‑round daylight saving time led to “absurdly late sunrises in the winter.” The bill must be acted on before the Senate’s deadline in early January, or it will expire.

How sunrise and sunset times shift

Phones that are set to update automatically will adjust overnight, and major manufacturers such as Apple, Google, and Samsung provide guidance for users. The time change does not affect Hawaii, most of Arizona, or U.S. territories including American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
